MIT Making Computer Parts from DNA

Following in the footsteps of Lynn Conway's pioneering work on VLSI that allowed ordinary students to create their own processors, a group of MIT professors have almost completed doing the same thing using DNA, known as synthetic biology. There are by some estimates more than a million weblogs. But most of them get no visibility in search engines. Only a few "A-List" blogs get into the top search engine results for a given topic, while the majority of blogs just don't get noticed. Of late a lot is being heard about the Linux Live CD’s. What are these Linux Live CD’s?? Why so much
hullabaloo about them? Hold your breath! Linux Live CD’s are the bootable Linux CD’s that have the
complete OS on them and the OS can be run in GUI mode! Yes in Linux GUI!! without actually installing
or modifying the existing partition(s) and the file system. Incredible isn’t it?
To begin just pop in the CD and restart the system (Make sure you have the CD drive as the first booting
device in the Boot Sequence in BIOS). The complete OS is decompressed and transferred to the Main
Memory ala RAMDisk or RAMDrive. If a system is minimal on RAM then a swap file can be created that
can be later deleted from the installed OS. The Live OS detects almost all the devices and loads the
appropriate/matching drivers seamlessly. The device detection is much better to the uPnP (Universal Plug n
Play of Windows) which is evident from the flawless working of latest nVidia AGP cards and Creative
Sound cards.(Infact drivers for these have to be installed in Windows XP).
This is followed by loading of all the required services like I/O services etc, the KDE or the GNOME
Desktop and Lo! a complete Linux OS with GUI is up and running. Clicking on a hard disk partition
automatically mounts the partition without any problem. Wanna still go back to your old/installed OS? All
you have to do is to remove the CD and restart the system to boot back to the installed OS.
The loaded OS has all the functionality of a full fledged Linux installation and most vendors ship with
numerous applications including RDBMS, Web servers, IDE’s for application development, compilers,
interpreters, Office Suites, Browsers, DVD Players etc. You name it and theres an application for that
need. The OS can be easily used for burning CD’s, connecting to the Internet and printing without any
problem. As an icing on the cake many Live Distros have an emulator called WINE that can actually run
windows executables (EXE’s) from within Linux.
The availability of Linux under GNU has fueled the development of these CD’s and resulted in distros with
individual purpose, branding and customization. For example there are exclusive Live CD’s with applications/
tools bundled for gaming, forensics, education and the list goes on. Here’s an idea - How about creating
Live CD’s specific to the needs of MJCET’s MCA and BE students?
The success of Live CD’s can be gauged from the sheer number of known Live Linux CD’s developed so
far. A mind boggling figure of over 100. They are based on the major Linux distros of today viz. Red
Hat(Bhavya OS Live CD of Hyderabad based BhavyaSoft), SuSe(SuSe Live Eval), Debian(Knoppix
Live CD) etc.
The Live CD’s are a real boon for students and all those people who would like to give Linux a try but are
afraid of the intricacies of a classical Linux installation. Now you can happily use Linux without worrying
about the installation blues while still keeping your old OS and partitions intact. As a true savior in time of
distress when the installed OS crashes the Live CD’s can be used as rescue CD’s. What more can you ask
for now from Linux. Microsoft Beware!
